How Believers Should Imitate the Love of Jesus

The love of Jesus is rooted in selflessness, sacrifice, and generosity – a model that challenges us all. In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul encourages us, as believers, to imitate Jesus’ example and walk in love: “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma.” This call isn’t just about feeling love, but choosing to live it out daily, especially when our emotions waver. The bible on generosity reminds us that true love is always outwardly focused, lived through giving, serving, and putting others first.

For those of us raising families, navigating busy careers, or seeking deeper spiritual growth here in the Kansas City area, Jesus’ example is both a comfort and a call to action. As our culture often promotes feelings-driven love, we are invited to keep our eyes and hearts fixed on Christ and learn from the bible on generosity.

The Love of Jesus

Jesus defined love through sacrifice. To follow Him and live sacrificially, we must seek to know Him intimately and communicate with Him regularly. The Bible describes four Greek words for love, with “agape” representing divine, unconditional love. John 3:16—a verse many of us know by heart—says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This is the ultimate demonstration of God’s agape love and the foundation for biblical generosity.

The bible on generosity teaches that true love involves giving of ourselves, our time, and our resources. As parents, professionals, or students, our circumstances and feelings can influence our ability to love well. The church in Ephesus, as described in Revelation 2, lost sight of Jesus’ sacrificial example and left their first love. We see here how easily we can drift when generosity and sacrifice are replaced by routine.

How Do You Know You Have Left Your First Love?

Love is not something that slips away; it’s something we step away from. The Ephesian church once burned brightly with love for Jesus, standing firm against idolatry and holding onto sound doctrine. Yet, their passion faded as their actions became detached from genuine love. Jesus warned them in Revelation 2:4-5 that unless they repented, their light would go out.

How can we recognize when we’ve left our first love?

  • We prioritize knowledge about God over knowing God personally.
  • We focus more on temporal things than on the eternal.
  • We allow “small” sins to linger, distracting us from our relationship with Him.
  • We go through the motions of faith without living on mission.

The bible on generosity calls us to examine our hearts—are we giving God our whole selves, or only what’s convenient? In our homes, workplaces, and neighborhoods, are we known for generosity that reflects Christ’s heart?

What Do You Do When You’ve Left Your First Love?

We don’t just serve what we love; we love what we serve. Love is more than a feeling; it’s an action rooted in sacrifice and generosity. In Revelation, Jesus gives the Ephesian church three steps to return to their first love:

  1. Remember where you started. Reflect on those early days when you were eager for God’s presence. For many of us, that might look like the first time we truly experienced community, worship, or serving others through the church.
  2. Repent of anything you’ve placed above your “first love.” The bible on generosity encourages us to identify and surrender idols—anything that takes God’s place in our hearts.
  3. Return to the “first works.” Serve, give, and love as you did when your faith was fresh. Often, as we step out to serve others, especially in our local community or through church ministries, the passion returns.

Generosity is a practical way to rekindle love for God and others. Whether it’s volunteering, sharing resources, or simply being present for someone in need, these actions reignite our connection with Christ.

The Calling for Christians

We only understand true love when we know its Author. As followers of Jesus, we are called to be living proof of God’s love—a love the bible on generosity describes as selfless, sacrificial, and generous.

  1. Love selflessly. As 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 reminds us, “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy… bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Jesus poured Himself out for others, setting the standard for us as parents, friends, and neighbors.
  2. Love sacrificially. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends” (John 15:13). Sometimes sacrifice is dramatic, but more often, it’s found in everyday acts—listening, encouraging, or sharing what we have.
  3. Love generously. The bible on generosity is clear: “Give, and it will be given to you” (Luke 6:38). We’re called to love our neighbors and even our enemies, to bless those who curse us, and to do good without expecting anything in return (Matthew 5:43-46). For our community here in Kansas City—across Blue Springs, the Crossroads, Independence, and Johnson County—generosity transforms lives.

When we practice generosity, we reflect God’s love to a watching world. Our willingness to give our time, talents, and resources helps build authentic community and opens doors for the gospel.

Be Living Proof of Generous Love

We are called to shine as lights for Christ in our culture, and one of the most powerful ways we do this is through generosity. If you’re struggling to feel love as you once did, remember that the bible on generosity teaches us to keep giving, keep serving, and keep loving. Jesus demonstrated perfect love by laying down His life for us—we are invited to follow in His steps.

Let’s encourage one another to remember our calling to love sacrificially and give generously. As we do, we become living proof of the gospel—demonstrating through our words and actions the transforming love of Jesus to everyone around us.

If you have questions or want to take your next step in living out Christlike love and generosity, reach out to us or get involved in one of our ministry opportunities. Together, we can show Kansas City—and the world—what it looks like to live the bible on generosity.
