Before Bethlehem, God was meticulously detailing the genealogy of His promised Messiah—the Savior King! God prophesied the Messiah would be the seed of Abraham, through Isaac, of the tribe of Judah, through Jesse, through David.
The story of Christmas is found in five women in the genealogy of Jesus. Of 32 generations listed by Matthew, only five of the names are of women. There is something important God wants us to know about these women!
The stories of these women in Jesus’ genealogy are the story of us all! Four of the five women were born to enemies of God and associated with sins considered at the time beyond all hope for redemption. Tamar, a prostitute, was an Ammonite. Her story reminds us that the sinless Son of God came to redeem us from the depth of depravity and the worst of sin.
Tamar gave birth to a baby boy named Perez, whose name means “break through.” Perez would be part of the Messianic lineage, a direct ancestor of the promised Messiah. Our Savior—the Lord Jesus Christ!
Jesus is our “breakthrough.” He has broken through sin’s chains, sin’s shame, sin’s stain, and sin’s blame. Jesus gives us a new identity, a new Father, and a new family tree spiritually that will stretch clear into eternity.
