Solomon’s covenant marriage to the Shulamite is a picture of God’s love for His Bride, the Church. God’s love is more than a commitment. It’s a covenant that is binding, unbreakable, irrevocable, and irreversible.
What is covenant love?
- Covenant love is pleasurable. After many years of marriage, Solomon and the Shulamite’s love life is still very much alive.
- Covenant love is providential. Solomon was convinced that God had destined him and the Shulamite to meet and marry.
- Covenant love is permanent. Solomon and the Shulamite are convinced that nothing can ever destroy their love. Their love is a seal upon their hearts.
- Covenant love is pure. While the Shulamite was a “wall” to other men, she was a “door” to her husband. He had free access to her, while all others had no access.
Covenant love appreciates the past. By remembering the past, Solomon and the Shulamite better appreciate the present and are committed to the future!
Covenant marriage is a union between one man and one woman before the Lord. God takes the commitment of a covenant marriage very seriously. He is honored by couples who use their marriages to live on mission, serve others, and please each other.
