As Christians, we often wonder, “What will heaven be like?” The answer to this question holds profound significance for our faith and hope. The biblical truths about heaven and what it will be like can transform our lives.
The Promise of Heaven
Who gets into heaven? Anyone who believes in Jesus Christ, confesses their sins, and accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior is promised eternal life in heaven. John 14:6 tells us there is no other way to heaven outside of Jesus.
- “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.’”—John 14:6
The Book of Revelation provides vivid descriptions of what heaven will be like. Looking at Revelation 21, we find 5 truths about heaven that will change our lives.
Truth #1: Heaven Is Physically New
Heaven is a physical place, not clouds in the sky. In Revelation 21:1, John describes his vision of a new heaven and a new earth.
- “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.”—Revelation 21:1
John’s vision tells us that the new heaven and earth are transformed places. It is not a scrapping of the old but a renewal and purification of what was once broken. Just as a master craftsman restores a valuable antique, God will restore and redeem His creation.
Truth #2: Heaven is Prepared
Heaven is a prepared place. Jesus tells us of His heavenly preparations in John 14:2-3.
- “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.”—John 14:2-3 (emphasis added)
This promise highlights God's personal care and attention for each of us. Heaven is where we will be fully known and loved by God.
Revelation 21:2 compares New Jerusalem, the holy city, to a bride prepared for her husband. This image tells us that heaven will be radiant, just like a bride coming down the aisle to meet her husband.
- “Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”—Revelation 21:2
God knows all of us better than we know ourselves, and He has prepared heaven especially for you. Heaven will be the most beautiful, perfect, and holy place we have ever experienced.
Truth #3: Heaven is the Place of God’s Presence
One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of heaven is the promise of God's presence. Revelation 21:3 declares,
- “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.’”—Revelation 21:3 (emphasis added)
This promise of God's presence is not just about being in the same place as God but experiencing an intimate, unbroken relationship with Him. It is the fulfillment of our deepest longings and the answer to our most profound questions. In heaven, we will no longer struggle with isolation or loneliness. We will be fully seen, fully known, and fully loved by our Creator.
Truth #4: Heaven Is a Place of Healing
Heaven is a place of hope and healing. There will be no heartache, pain, disease, or sin. In a world where hope can often feel elusive, the promise of heaven offers a great source of encouragement. Revelation 21:4 tells us what heaven will be like.
- “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”—Revelation 21:4
Our current generation struggles more with hope for the future than any other in the past 100 years. This makes the biblical promise of heaven even more vital. It reminds us that our present struggles and sufferings are not the end of the story. A future paradise awaits us, where every tear will be wiped away, and everything will be perfect.
Truth #5: Heaven Is Our Home
Understanding what heaven will be like should transform our lives on earth. It should shape our priorities, our values, and our actions. If we truly believe that heaven is a physical, prepared place where we will dwell with God, it should inspire us to live with purpose and hope.
- “Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’”—Revelation 21:5
The knowledge that God will make all things new should motivate us to share the good news of Jesus with others. Heaven is a promise available to all who believe. Due to the corruption of sin, we cannot enter heaven through our own works, but luckily, we don’t have to.
- “And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.’”—Revelation 21:6-7
Heaven is not just God’s home, it’s ours as well. This promise gives us confidence and hope knowing that there is more waiting for us in eternity!
