“Eternal” implies quality as well as quantity. The promise of eternal life for believers begins when you place your faith in Jesus. This promise can function both inside and outside the confines of time.
Only knowing God brings deep soul satisfaction and immerses you in eternal life. Church attendance, baptism, being a good person, and being religious are good things, but they won’t give you everlasting life as only knowing Jesus can.
Do You Know Christ?
Many of us can fall into the trap of thinking we know Christ because we've heard about Him, read books about Him, or know someone who knows Him well. But do you really know Christ? Have you experienced a personal relationship with Him?
It's easy to mistake knowledge about Christ for a personal relationship with Him. Before Jesus went to the cross, He prayed that all who put their faith in Him would have a deep, transformative knowledge of God and Himself. This knowledge would give them the gift of eternal life. In John 17:3, He defines eternal life: “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” This knowledge is not just intellectual but relational, a personal encounter that changes everything.
The Difference Between Knowing and Experiencing
Knowing about water and experiencing a rushing waterfall are two very different things. Similarly, learning about Christ is entirely different than experiencing a personal relationship with Him. Just as standing under a waterfall immerses you in the experience, truly knowing Christ means being immersed in His love and redemption.
This knowledge transforms you, as described in Romans 6:4, “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” This new life is marked by the profound changes that come from an intimate relationship with Jesus.
Eternal Life Begins Today
Eternal life isn’t just a future promise but something that can start today. The Greek word for eternal life, “aionios,” implies both quality and quantity of life. This means eternal life transcends time and space. It begins the moment you enter a relationship with Jesus.
In John 10:10, Jesus says, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” This fullness of life begins now.
In John 11:25-26, Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.” Your soul is sealed for eternity when you believe in Jesus and confess Him as your Savior. Although your physical body will eventually die, your soul will be with Jesus in heaven for eternity.
This is the life-changing knowledge Jesus prayed for us to receive in John 17:3. We can cling to this everlasting promise and hope when things in the world feel hopeless because we know this world is not the end!
Where Do You Find Satisfaction?
Many people seek fulfillment in their careers, sexual relationships, or religious activities. While these pursuits offer temporary satisfaction, they ultimately fall short of providing the deep, lasting fulfillment our souls crave.
True fulfillment comes from a personal relationship with God, who loves us unconditionally and desires to be the source of our eternal peace and joy.
In John 17:3, Jesus teaches that eternal life is found in knowing the only true God and His Son whom He sent. This relationship with God transcends all earthly pleasures and achievements, offering a profound and enduring sense of purpose and contentment that nothing else can provide. We find the fulfillment and satisfaction our hearts long for when we turn from fleeting, earthly pleasures and embrace God’s gift of salvation.
How to Receive Eternal Life
Eternal life is more than an insurance policy for life after death. It impacts your life today. To experience this, you must know the one true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent. This relationship starts by confessing Jesus as Lord and believing God raised Him from the dead.
Romans 10:9-10 states, “that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
If you are unsure whether you truly know Christ, reflect on your relationship with Him. Ask yourself these questions:
- Do I recognize that I am a sinner in need of salvation?
- Have I confessed my need for a Savior?
- Do I believe that Jesus died for my sins and rose again?
- Have I admitted my need for Jesus and asked Him to be my Lord and Savior?
Jesus wants to offer you eternal life now, not just in the future. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” This promise is for everyone, regardless of their past. By accepting Jesus, you start a relationship that transforms your life from the inside out.
Stepping Into Eternal Life
Just like diving into the midst of a rushing waterfall, stepping into a relationship with Jesus requires a decision. Don’t be content with just observing from the shore. Immerse yourself in His love and grace.
This immersion is beautifully described in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” This new life in Christ is a daily walk filled with His presence and power.
When you place your faith in Jesus, His presence comes to dwell inside you in the form of the Holy Spirit. This means you live with direct access to His power and presence, even while you are on earth.
Embrace Eternal Life Today
If you still haven’t decided to follow Jesus, now is the time. Confess with your mouth, believe in your heart, and receive the gift of eternal life today. God created you for a purpose, and He wants you to experience the fullness of life that only He can offer.
