What Is a Covenant Marriage?

In a culture where divorce rates are high, the idea of a covenant marriage seems outdated. Many people view marriage as a legal contract that can be dissolved if it doesn’t work out. Yet God’s vision for marriage goes far deeper. God sees marriage as a sacred, binding promise that mirrors the everlasting covenant He has with His people.

The Bible often uses marriage as an illustration of God’s relationship with His people. Jesus is described as the bridegroom and the church as His bride, and the two are united in an everlasting covenant. Covenant marriage is a living picture of God’s unchanging and unconditional love for us.

Covenant vs. Contractual Marriage

“’For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” —Ephesians 5:31-32

Contractual marriage is a commitment and agreement between two people based on both parties receiving benefits and satisfaction. One or both people can dissolve the marriage if the terms are unmet or broken. Commitments come and go, but covenants are binding, unbreakable, and irreversible.

Unlike ordinary contracts, which can be broken or dissolved when circumstances change, a covenant is designed to be enduring. A covenant marriage reflects:

  • A sacred promise before God and witnesses.
  • A lifelong bond that is intended to be unbreakable.

  • God’s love and faithfulness.

  • Perseverance, forgiveness, and restoration.

  • Christ’s relationship with the church.

The Biblical Foundation of Covenant Marriage

Covenant marriage is deeply rooted in Scripture. The Song of Solomon is a poetic celebration of love that lasts through every season of life. The story culminates in chapter 8, where the couple, now in their golden years, demonstrates a love that has withstood the test of time.

This kind of enduring love is not just a romantic ideal. It is God’s design for a covenant marriage. Jesus affirmed this when he said, “What God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:9). The apostle Paul echoed this in Ephesians 5, urging husbands and wives to love and submit to one another as Christ loves the church.

Covenant marriage is not a joyless endurance test. Song of Solomon celebrates the pleasure, intimacy, and delight couples can have after decades together. The couple’s playful affection in their later years is a testament to the enduring joy found in a lifelong commitment. Even after 40 or 50 years together, couples can be even more in love than they were when they first married.

Learning from Solomon’s Successes and Failures

The Song of Solomon, written by King Solomon, shares timeless wisdom on God’s design for covenant marriage, love, and romance. While Solomon was far from perfect in these areas, God used his story to teach us about redemption, restoration, and the importance of finishing well.

God blessed Solomon with wisdom, and he became the wisest man who ever lived (1 Kings 3:1-15). Despite this wisdom, Solomon’s life was marked by serious moral and relational failure, which led to his spiritual downfall.

Solomon’s life reminds us that no one sets out to ruin their marriage or family. Compromise often begins with small, seemingly insignificant decisions. For Solomon, it started with marrying the daughter of Pharaoh for political reasons. This single step away from God’s design eventually led to greater compromise and spiritual decline. He went on to have 700 wives and 300 concubines (1 Kings 11:3). It’s unlikely he believed one compromise would lead to 699 others.

Similarly, no one wakes up one day and decides to destroy their marriage. It happens one small step at a time.

Solomon’s choices stopped him from experiencing the joy of a covenant marriage between one man and one woman. His gradual drift from God’s commands led not only to personal ruin but also to the spiritual downfall of his family and the nation of Israel. This is a sobering reminder that the choices we make in marriage have serious consequences.

A couple finds joy in covenant marriage.

Five Characteristics of Covenant Love

The covenant marriage illustrated in Song of Solomon has many attributes, but it can be best described as being:

1. Pleasurable

Covenant marriage is marked by ongoing joy, intimacy, and delight, even in the later years of life. God wants to give us a good gift that we enjoy and that brings us fulfillment.

2. Binding

Marriage is an unbreakable, lifelong commitment where the couple means “till death do us part” as a reflection of God’s enduring love for us.

3. Sacrificial

True love is selfless, putting the needs and well-being of one’s spouse first. Because Jesus displayed the ultimate gift of sacrificial love through His death on the cross, we can show sacrificial love to others.

4. Redemptive

Covenant love offers forgiveness and restoration, even after failure or disappointment. God offers us ultimate redemption in Christ, and He wants us to forgive others.

5. Reflective of God’s Love

Ultimately, covenant marriage is a living picture of God’s everlasting love and faithfulness to us. It is also a place where the husband and wife can be vulnerable with each other and be fully known and fully loved.

How to Prepare for and Sustain a Covenant Marriage

Whether you are single and desire to marry or are married and looking to strengthen your relationship, here are practical steps to help you build and sustain a covenant marriage:
