Friendship is an essential part of life. We all need good friends, but what does the Bible say about friendship? The Bible offers several examples of what it means to be a true friend. The 4 Marks of a True Friend
What makes someone a true friend? According to the Bible, true friendship is built on four key characteristics: selflessness, love, generosity, and forgiveness. Let’s look at each of these in more detail.
Selflessness
One of the most important qualities of a true friend is selflessness. Selflessness means prioritizing the needs and well-being of others over your own desires. When we choose to be selfless in our friendships, we reflect the love of Christ, who put our needs above His own by laying down His life for us.
- “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (emphasis added).—Philippians 2:3-4
This passage captures the mindset of a selfless friend. A true friend promotes others above themselves while celebrating and caring for others.
Love
Without love, a friendship lacks depth and significance. The Bible teaches us that love is more than just a feeling. It’s a choice to care for someone and put their needs above your own. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 answers the question of what the Bible says about friendship by giving a list of things love compels us to do. These qualities are the foundation of true friendship.

The Bible uses the Greek word phileo to describe the love shared by close friends. Phileo love means to love each other with genuine affection and brotherly love. This means being devoted to a friend’s well-being and honoring them in your words and actions. This type of love will require a sacrifice of time, energy, or personal comfort to be there for them when they need it most.
Generosity
A true friend is generous with their possessions, time, attention, and care. Generosity in friendship is about being willing to give without expecting anything in return. This can mean being generous with our time by listening to a friend’s problems, offering advice when asked, or simply being there to share in life’s challenges and joys.
- “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”—1 Peter 4:10
A generous friend offers wisdom, support, and encouragement. It’s not about what you can get from the friendship but about how you can serve the other person.
Forgiveness
In any close relationship, there will be misunderstandings and disagreements. But a true friend is quick to forgive and generous in grace, just as God is toward us.
- “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.”—Ephesians 4:32
Without forgiveness, any relationship in your life cannot be healthy or long-lasting. As believers, being forgiven and forgiving others is essential to our walk with Christ.
How Jesus Modeled Friendship
Jesus is the perfect model of what it means to be a true friend. He demonstrated sacrificial and unconditional love for others, especially His disciples. He invested time in building close, personal relationships with His disciples. Jesus’ example sets the standard for what the Bible says about friendship.
- Jesus served others.
Jesus was a friend who was willing to serve others. In John 13:1-17, we see one of the most powerful examples of His humility and friendship when He washed His disciples’ feet. This act of service, typically performed by the lowest servant, showed His disciples that true friendship means putting others first.
- Jesus spoke the truth.
Jesus also spoke truth into His disciples’ lives. In John 15:15, He tells His disciples, “No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.” Jesus was open with His friends, sharing the truth of God’s Word with them and encouraging them to live according to God’s will.
- Jesus sacrificed His life for us.
The greatest way Jesus modeled friendship was through His sacrifice on the cross. In John 15:13, He says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” Jesus gave His life for us on the cross, showing that true friendship is about laying down your life—figuratively or literally—for the sake of others. His sacrificial love is the highest standard of friendship.
