This February, Abundant Life church threw a prom-style celebration where individuals with special needs were the guests of honor. Our first Night to Shine event reminded us how powerfully God uses one joyful evening to communicate His love, purpose, and belonging to every person who walked through the doors.
Night to Shine at Abundant Life: A Prom Night with a Purpose
Abundant Life set a clear goal in 2025–2026: grow our special needs ministry and expand outreach to individuals with disabilities and their families. Night to Shine, hosted in partnership with the Tim Tebow Foundation, became the perfect way to launch that vision in February 2026, offering a prom night experience tailored just for them.
We welcomed guests with a full evening that went far beyond a traditional dance, creating a safe, fun, and Christ-centered environment where every VIP was celebrated as uniquely created in the image of God. From sensory-friendly spaces to intentional staffing and volunteers, every detail was designed to help families relax, connect, and experience the joy of being fully included.
A-Life Discipleship Journey and Special Needs Ministry
Night to Shine is one expression of a broader discipleship vision at Abundant Life called the A-Life Discipleship Journey. As a church, we have 5 specific goals for growing our special needs ministry in 2025 and 2026:
- Hosting Night to Shine annually. We hosted our first Night to Shine event in February 2026 and are already planning another for 2027!
- Launch Buddy Week. Abundant Life’s summer day camp for individuals with special needs will launch in Summer 2026.
- Expand Special Needs Buddy Programs. We desire to offer Buddy Programs in our kids’ ministry at every Abundant Life campus.
- Strengthen support groups for parents of children with special needs. Ministries like Respite Nights and Care Communities offer connection and support to parents of children with special needs.
- Start Friendship Club. Friendship Club offers community and buddies to disabled students who attend Fusion Student Ministry on Wednesday nights.
We believe every life is intentionally designed by God, so our special needs ministry exists to extend compassionate care, spiritual formation, and genuine community for individuals with disabilities and their families. Night to Shine serves as both a celebration and an entry point, allowing families to experience the ongoing support, friendships, and next steps available to them through Abundant Life.
A Night to Remember
From the moment guests arrived, Night to Shine felt like a celebration of dignity, joy, and purpose. Volunteers decorated shuttle buses, turned up the music, and transformed them into “party shuttles” that set the tone for the entire evening. Inside, VIPs enjoyed dinner, karaoke, face painting, caricature artists, and sensory-friendly spaces that made the environment accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
Later in the evening, everyone came together for a gospel message from Pastor Phil Hopper, pointing hearts to Jesus as the One who gives every person identity and worth. At the end of the night, each VIP was crowned as king or queen of the prom, a powerful reminder that in God’s eyes, they are seen, valued, and dearly loved.
Stories of Impact from Night to Shine 2026
Behind every crown and every cheer on the red carpet is a story, and many families shared how deeply Night to Shine impacted them. One mom, Katie, shared that her daughter Hannah skipped her high school homecoming dance because it would have been too overstimulating, but she had been excited for weeks about Night to Shine, knowing she would have a buddy by her side the entire night.
Another mother shared that her daughter, Hailey, usually does not let anyone do her hair, yet she sat still and let a stylist curl it before walking the red carpet. Hailey visited Abundant Life’s Special Needs Ministry the following Sunday. This was her first time in church since coming with her grandmother as a little girl. These stories are why we do events like Night to Shine!
An 18-year-old young man drove more than 200 miles to escort a family friend on the red carpet. He shared that he “wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world.”
One parent shared that their kids miss out on so much because of their disabilities, so it meant everything to see something created just for them. Each VIP who attended Night to Shine was celebrated, included, and surrounded by caring volunteers. For parents who often watch their special needs children miss out on typical experiences, this brought tears, gratitude, and a renewed sense of hope.
Why Night to Shine Matters for Our Church and Community
For Abundant Life, Night to Shine is more than a one-night event; it is a visible expression of what we believe about God, people, and the church. We are passionate about special needs ministry because many individuals with disabilities never get to attend a traditional prom, join milestone events, or experience church spaces designed with their needs in mind. Night to Shine helps change that narrative.
Through sensory supports, buddies, and intentional hospitality, our heart is to build a community where individuals with special needs and their families know they belong every day of the year, not just on prom night.
Ultimately, Night to Shine is a reminder that each person is created in God’s image, with a purpose and for a purpose. The church is called to reflect Christ’s unconditional love by making room at the table—and on the dance floor—for everyone. As we look ahead to Buddy Week, expanded buddy programs, and future Night to Shine events, we are excited to keep opening doors so more families can experience the joy, belonging, and hope that only Jesus can provide.
