Spring is a season of fresh starts. Flowers bloom, trees bud, and the cold, gray days of winter start to fade. It’s a great time to take inventory, not just of our closets and garages, but our hearts, and ask, “Is there anything we need to clean out or renew spiritually?” As believers, this kind of “spring cleaning” starts by remembering what it means to be made new in Christ.
Being Made New in Christ
When we put our faith in Jesus, something powerful happens. We are made completely new. Not just improved. Not just cleaned up. New.
- “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”—2 Corinthians 5:17
This transformation isn’t something we can do on our own. It starts with God’s grace. We’re not made new because we tried harder. We’re made new because Jesus died for us and rose again. When we accept Him, we step into a new identity, one that’s rooted in who He is, not who we were.
- “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”—Romans 6:4
The Process of Salvation
Salvation is how God rescues us from sin and brings us into a relationship with Him. It's not something we earn. It's a gift.
- “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”—Ephesians 2:8-9
Believing in Jesus means more than just believing He existed. It means trusting that He is the Son of God, sent to save us. It means understanding what He did on the cross and why it matters for us today. Understanding the difference between belief and faith can deepen your relationship with Jesus and strengthen your trust in His promises.
- “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace…”—Ephesians 1:7
- “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”—Romans 10:9
Through Jesus, you can find confidence in the security of your salvation. God’s gift of salvation for those who trust in Him is a steadfast promise that cannot be lost.
Justification: Being Declared Righteous
Justification happens the moment we put our faith in Jesus. God declares us righteous, not because we are perfect, but because Jesus was perfect on our behalf. This is our new position before God: free, forgiven, and made right because of Jesus.
- “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ…”—Romans 5:1
- “…knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ… for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”—Galatians 2:16
Sanctification: The Ongoing Transformation
Sanctification is the lifelong journey of becoming more like Jesus. It’s not a quick fix. It’s daily, often slow, and always led by the Holy Spirit. Think of it like spring cleaning for the soul, pulling weeds, tossing out spiritual clutter, planting good things, and waiting patiently for fruit to grow.
This transformation happens from the inside out. It takes time. As Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” That renewal comes as we fix our thoughts on what is true, noble, just, pure, and lovely, exactly what
- “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”—Philippians 1:6
It’s easy to get discouraged when change feels slow. But sanctification isn’t about reaching perfection overnight. It’s about trusting the work of God and the Holy Spirit in you. God is doing a deep clean in our hearts, and He won’t stop until the work is complete.
Renewing the Mind, Body, and Spirit
This spiritual renewal touches every part of who we are, mind, body, and spirit. Just like opening the windows and letting in fresh air, the Holy Spirit brings life and clarity into areas that may have grown stale or cluttered.
Renewing the Mind
Transformation begins with how we think. As we fill our minds with God’s truth through Scripture and prayer, we begin to see things the way He does. In Philippians 4:8, Paul tells us what to think on: “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”
Renewing the Body
We honor God not just in what we think and say, but in how we live. This includes how we treat our bodies, how we use our time, and how we care for others. Romans 12:1 calls us to “Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”
Renewing the Spirit
Worship, community, and time with God help us keep our spirits refreshed and aligned with His. In Psalm 51:10, David modeled a humble prayer to ask God to renew his spirit. He prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
The Fruits of Being Made New in Christ
As God works in us, the results begin to show, like a home that’s been cleaned, restored, and full of light.
Visible Changes: Our priorities shift. We go from selfishness to selflessness, from pride to humility, from fear to faith.
- “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…”—Galatians 5:22-23
Impact on Relationships: We begin to love people better. We forgive quicker. We serve more willingly.
- “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you…”—John 13:34
Living with Purpose: God gives us purpose. We are His, saved for a reason and equipped to live out our new identities as part of His Kingdom.
- “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light…”—1 Peter 2:9
