Abundant Life exists to see lives changed by Jesus by being living proof of a loving God to a watching world, and Abundant Life Worship exists for the same purpose. As a church, we want to display God's love in irresistible ways in our communities and around the world. The song “Irresistible” is how our worship team brought this vision to life.
The Story of “Irresistible”
In 2 Corinthians 5:14, Paul writes that “the love of Christ compels us.” But before we can be compelled to action, we must be captivated by His love. Our team prayed about how to creatively show God’s love, and we created a song about how Jesus loves us and how His love changes us.
3 Reasons Why Jesus’ Love Is Irresistible
The love of Jesus has life-changing power. When we encounter it, it moves us to action. The Bible reveals several truths about Jesus’ love, so we picked 3 of them to be the foundation for the song.
- The love of Jesus redefines our identity.
We have sinned and fallen short of God’s standard of perfection. Apart from Christ, we can identify only as sinners. We deserve death for our sins. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (emphasis added).
Jesus came to save us from the penalty of death. 1 John 3:1 tells of His loving sacrifice for us, “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!”
When we turn from our sin and embrace Christ’s gift of salvation, we are welcomed into God’s family. We get a new identity as His children and are no longer defined by sin.
- The love of Jesus redeems our story.
Our lives before Christ were marked by sin. Romans 6:20-21 says that we were slaves to it, and the only fruit of that slavery is shame and death. But in Christ, we have been forgiven and redeemed.
In 1 Corinthians 6:11, Paul writes, “…but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” God takes our broken lives and writes beautiful stories of redemption. Romans 8:28 reminds us that “all things work together for good” for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
The love of Jesus moves us to show our love for Him. 1 John 4:19 sums this up, “We love Him because He first loved us.” There is no more perfect example of redemptive love than the example of Jesus Christ.
- The love of Jesus redirects our steps.
Before Christ intercepted us with His grace, we were on a path of destruction (Matthew 7:13). We lived for our own vain pursuits and selfish gain, all pointing us towards a destination of death.
Because of God’s great love for us, He saved us from death. Ephesians 2:4-5 says, “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ” (emphasis added).
Jesus died for us to have eternal life and a personal relationship with God. Our lives no longer belong to us, but we live to glorify His name. 2 Corinthians 5:15 says, “and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” Our future is now in heaven, and our purpose is to bring others with us by showing them the hope and glory of Christ (Colossians 1:27).
This is the good news of the gospel. Once we see how much God loves us, we can't look away. We wanted to communicate this amazing love of Jesus in our song.
How the Love of Jesus Changes Us
The Bible records how captivating Jesus' ministry was, drawing crowds wherever He went. He loved the broken, the searching, the lost, and the hopeless and welcomed them into His family. Our song talks about this love:
“It’s the way you love the broken / Moving through the crowds to find the ones who need You most and / The way You tell the searching come to me, my arms are open”
“You move in closer without question / You’re not intimidated by my mountain of transgressions / Kneeling down to wash my feet a million miles from heaven”
These lyrics show how Jesus cared for the broken, invited outsiders to follow Him, washed His disciples' feet, and gave His life for us. This love makes us declare in the chorus:
“Better than I’ve ever known / Beyond what I’m looking for / Oh, it’s irresistible / The way You love”
Knowing the love of Jesus changes everything about us. We can't stay the same once we've experienced it:
“How could I be the same / From the moment You called my name”
Transformed by His love, we are called to “proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light” (1 Peter 2:9). The lyrics continue with a commitment to living on mission for God’s glory:
“I’ll speak of Your life to the hopeless / I’ll follow Your heart for the broken / Your hands and Your feet, I want them to see / The way You love”
When God’s love fills our hearts, it doesn’t just change us. It makes us want to show His love to others.
Being Living Proof of Jesus’ Love
Jesus said we would be His witnesses “in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8). His love is not just for us to enjoy but also for us to share. Our song, “Irresistible,” is about showing the love of Jesus to the world.
Nothing is better than experiencing God’s life-changing love and letting it guide our lives. We hope our song reminds people of Jesus’ irresistible love and encourages them to share it with others, finding it better than anything they’ve ever known.
