Fearless Faith: Overcoming the Weight of Fear

Is it possible to have fearless faith? Stepping into God’s will often means stepping out of your comfort zone, which can be both beautiful and scary. The real question isn't whether you will experience fear, but whether you will allow faith or fear to control you.

Fear: Recognizing Its Reality

Everyone carries some weight of fear into their lives and spiritual journeys. Even seasoned leaders and faithful believers encounter it, especially when facing the unknown or significant life changes. Faith and fear often walk hand in hand. When you feel afraid, you must allow your faith to lead you forward. To live with fearless faith means living a life fully trusting God.

Good Fear vs. Bad Fear

It's important to understand the difference between good fear and bad fear. Bad fear paralyzes and holds you back, keeping you safely anchored when God calls you to set sail.

Good fear sharpens your senses and prepares you for action. It puts you on high alert, ready to trust God and move forward despite any anxiety. God doesn’t want believers frozen by fear. Instead, He wants fearless faith to be activated in you when you encounter setbacks, struggles, and seemingly impossible circumstances.

Fearless Faith in the Life of Joshua

In Joshua chapter 1, Joshua faced the daunting task of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. As he prepared to step out in faith, he likely felt the same fears believers feel today…

  • Fear of failure
  • Fear of inadequacy
  • Fear of the unknown

Forty years before this, the Israelites were on the brink of entering the Promised Land (Numbers 13-14). They had enough faith to escape the tyranny of Egypt, but not enough to fully step into the land God promised them.

This is a common struggle for many believers today. They have enough faith for salvation from sin's penalty but not enough to navigate daily trials or fully embrace the abundant life Christ offers. Joshua’s leadership into the Promised Land represented fearless faith as he stepped into a new unknown.

Faith Is Not the Absence of Fear

Faith is not the absence of fear; it’s the absence of self. Fearless faith doesn't mean you don't experience fear. It means that you fear less as faith steps in. This happens when you move beyond trying to save yourself and entrust your life to God.

Our natural instinct is to protect and preserve ourselves from danger. However, self-preservation is the enemy of victory. A deep-seated fear of failure, rooted in not wanting to look foolish or fall flat on your face, can stop you from stepping into new callings.

God wants you to live fearlessly so you can experience life abundantly. Jesus warned against trying to preserve your life in Mark 8:35.

  • “Forwhoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.”Mark 8:35

The more you die to yourself, the more fully alive you become in Christ.

  • “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.”Galatians 2:20

When you receive Jesus as your Savior, He doesn’t just want to live in you. He wants to live through you. This transformed life allows you to do things you never dreamed were possible, but it requires fearless faith.

Every act of faith, whether starting a new business, pursuing a challenging career change, or facing a personal crisis, involves wrestling with fear. But you can face your fears with faith, knowing that God is with you every step of the way, just as He was with Joshua.

Moving from Fear to Faith: Practical Steps

To move from fear to fearless faith, you must surrender your will to God. Jesus demonstrated this in the Garden of Gethsemane when He said to the Father, “Not my will, but Yours be done” (Luke 22:42). This is a daily act of faith.

It is important to surround yourself with a community when you are facing fears. Your community is a safe place to share your fears, pray, and receive support. When you join a community group, you will also find accountability and encouragement, which are essential for growth.

Consider these practical actions:

  • Be obedient to step out of your comfort zone to experience God in new ways.
  • Give your fears to God in prayer and ask Him for fearless faith.
  • Join a small group or community for accountability and encouragement.
  • Write down examples of God’s faithfulness.

Faith in Motion: Trusting God with the Unknown

When faith is put in motion, God goes in motion. Faith leads to action, and God's provision follows. We see this in the life of Joshua, where God promised to be with him as he stepped out in faith.

  • “No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not leave you nor forsake you”Joshua 1:5
  • “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go”Joshua 1:9

The journey of fearless faith is continuous, and each new challenge brings new opportunities to choose faith over fear. If you are not convinced of God's faithfulness, new challenges will fill you with fear. But knowing He is faithful allows for less fear and more faith.

God never promised to keep you out of the storm. He promised He would be with you in the storm and deliver you through it. As Hebrews 13:5-6 says, “For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.' So we may boldly say: ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?'”

The 3 Pillars of Fearless Faith

There are three pillars of faith that can withstand the weight of fears:

1)   God’s Character

God cannot compromise His character. He is faithful, and He will always do what He says He will do. When God says, “I am faithful,” it means He will never abandon or leave. He is with you in your fear, and He wants you to take confidence in His presence.

2)   God’s Love

Fearless faith comes from confidence in God’s perfect love. When you truly believe God loves you perfectly, you can live fearlessly.

“There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.”1 John 4:18

3)   God’s Word

Confidence in God's Word gives confidence in the Living God. Meditating on God's Word means allowing it to transform your heart and life from the inside out. Faith in action is obedience in motion, trusting that God will do what He promised (Joshua 1:7-8). You can live fearlessly when you are living obediently.
