Today, many churches use social media and live streaming to share their services. At Abundant Life, we do this too. But this shift raises some big questions. Why should churches spend time and money on screens? Are we just trying to put on a big show, or is there a deeper purpose?
The truth is, God is calling us to use these tools. However, our ultimate goal is not just to gather a large crowd online. Our goal is to connect people to true, biblical community. We want to see people move from simple online moments to deep, personal relationships. Understanding that God puts people in your life for a reason helps us see that even an online interaction can be the start of a meaningful faith journey. Understanding the Concerns about Online Church
It is completely normal to have concerns about online church. Many pastors and church members worry about this digital shift. They ask good questions like:
- Does watching a screen replace going to church?
- Are we spending too much money on cameras and technology?
- Does online church make people lazy Christians?
These are real dangers. If we only watch a service on a screen, we miss out on true fellowship. We can start to treat church like a movie or a football game. Think about someone struggling with anxiety, addiction, or grief. Think about somebody who is just beginning to consider learning more about Jesus Christ, Christianity, or attending a church. They might feel scared or too ashamed to sit in a church pew. But they might watch a sermon in the privacy of their own home.
The internet allows us to reach across streets and over oceans. A simple video can share the hope of Christ with thousands of people across the world at the same time. It also helps our own church family stay connected. When you travel or take care of a sick family member, you can still worship with your community.
There are major benefits to attending church online when you cannot attend in person. For example, it allows families to watch a sermon together at their own pace. Parents can pause the video to teach their kids and ask them big questions about God. It also helps note-takers rewatch a powerful message to study the Bible more deeply. The online platform is not a replacement for the local church. Instead, it is a front door that invites people into the family of God.
The Power of Online Churches and Home Churches
For some communities, a traditional church building is not down the street or something they are comfortable calling church. That is where the model of the home church becomes incredibly important. A home church is not just an online streaming site. It is simply a gathering of believers, anywhere, at any time.
Sometimes these groups watch a streamed service together. Other times, they gather simply to pray, read and study Scripture, or share a meal. For people living in rural areas, those with limited mobility, or believers looking for a smaller family feel, home churches are a true lifeline.
This model blends the wide reach of our digital resources with the local warmth of an intimate space. In these settings, nobody gets lost in the crowd. People can look each other in the eye, pray for one another, and talk openly and deeply about life. It proves that the church is not a building. The church is the people of God gathered around His truth, no matter the size of the room or the technology used.
Stewarding Resources for God's Glory
How can churches properly manage the time, energy, and money required for online platforms? The answer is stewardship. Stewardship means managing what God has given us to bring Him the most glory.
We must remember that technology is a tool, not the goal. We do not use cameras to show off. We use them to share the gospel. To steward resources well, churches must focus on connection rather than just production. Every piece of content we make should point people toward a next step in their faith.

He taught them Scripture and modeled a holy life.
The early church followed this same pattern. In the book of Acts, thousands of people received salvation in a single day. But how did those people grow in their faith? They met in small groups inside their homes.
As the Bible says in Acts 2:46:
“So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.”
They had both the large temple gatherings and the deep, home-based relationships.
Today, many believers are trading wide crowds for deep roots. They are tired of superficial religion. They want real discipleship. This is where digital discipleship and relational discipleship meet.
