As we approach another election season, many Christians find themselves uncertain about how to engage in political discussions in a way that reflects their faith. The health of the church plays a crucial role in shaping the direction of the nation. When the church is silent on important cultural issues, society drifts further from biblical truth. While the culture often tries to silence conversations about politics and religion, it is essential for the church to step up and engage with wisdom, humility, and love.

Too often, Christians allow the world to shape their thinking instead of letting Christ transform them. Romans 1:18-19 warns of the wrath of God for those who turn from Him. We see this in our culture today—people know the truth but suppress it. As Christians, we must be vigilant in guarding our hearts and minds against being more influenced by the culture around us than by the Christ who lives in us.
The Wrong Disposition Can Overshadow the Right Position
You can have the right position but the wrong disposition. In other words, it’s possible to be correct in your stance on an issue but wrong in the way you communicate it. When we allow anger, pride, or condescension to drive our interactions, we undermine the very truth we seek to uphold. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us, “A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

When it comes to politics, Christians often fall into one of two traps: aggression or passivity.
- Aggression: This response is characterized by a combative attitude. It's marked by an “us vs. them” mentality that seeks to win arguments rather than love people. While it’s important to stand for truth, Ephesians 4:15 calls us to do so in love. Aggressive engagement often leaves others feeling attacked, rather than drawn to Christ.
- Passivity: On the other hand, some Christians shy away from political engagement altogether. They believe that since our hope is in Christ, we don’t need to involve ourselves in the messy world of politics. While it's true that our ultimate hope lies in God, we are still called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). This includes using our influence to promote justice, righteousness, and biblical values in society.
5 Things Christians Should Do as the Election Approaches
As the election draws near, here are five things Christians can do to engage thoughtfully and biblically:
- Pray
The first and most important step is to pray. Pray for wisdom, discernment, and that God’s will be done (2 Chronicles 7:14). We need His guidance to navigate the complexities of the political landscape.
2. Research
Christians should make informed decisions. This means taking the time to research the candidates and their positions on key issues. Avoid the trap of blindly following party lines or popular opinion. Instead, seek out reliable sources of information and compare them to the teachings of Scripture.
3. Use Discernment
As you research, use discernment to sift through the noise and identify the truth. In today’s media environment, it’s easy to be swayed by misinformation or emotional appeals. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see through fallacies and lies, and to guide you toward truth.
4. Vote with Biblical Values in Mind
Voting is an important way Christians can exercise stewardship. While our hope is not in the outcome of any election, we are responsible for how we steward our right to vote. As you consider the candidates, weigh their positions against biblical values, particularly on these key issues:
- Religious Freedom (Acts 5:29) – We are called to say “yes” to religious freedom and protect the right to worship God freely, praying for leaders so we may live in peace.
- Sanctity of Life (Jeremiah 1:5) – We must affirm the sanctity of life, recognizing that God knows us before we are formed in the womb and has set each life apart for His purpose.
- The Biblical Definition of Family (Genesis 1:27, Genesis 2:23-24) – Uphold the biblical definition of marriage and gender, as ordained by God.
- The Rule of Law (Proverbs 21:3) – Support leaders who seek justice, fairness, and righteousness, as doing right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
- The Dignity of Every Person (Matthew 25:40) – Care for the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized, knowing that whatever we do for the least of these, we do for Christ.
Finally, remember that our ultimate allegiance is to the Kingdom of God. Our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), and we are called to represent Christ in every area of life—including politics. As you engage with others, let your words and actions be marked by love, humility, and a desire to honor God above all else.
