“He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him disciplines him promptly.”—Proverbs 13:4
A father’s role sometimes involves discipline, but discipline should always be done out of love, not frustration. Discipline teaches your children to obey authority so they stay under God’s authoritative protection and live a long life, as promised in Ephesians 6:1-4.
4. Protection
“In the fear of the Lord there is strong confidence, and His children will have a place of refuge.” —Proverbs 14:26
A father’s role is to be his family's spiritual and physical protector. If you walk in obedience to God, you can have confidence that He will lead and protect you as you lead your family.
Fathers Are Spiritual Leaders in the Home
“And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”—Joshua 24:15
The Israelites constantly battled the temptation to worship other gods. Finally, Joshua stood before the people and declared that his family would serve the Lord. When the people saw his faith, they made the same commitment and rededicated their lives to the Lord.
Joshua didn’t let anyone else decide who would control his house. He declared that his family would serve the Lord and led them in serving Him until his death. He left a legacy of faith for his children and the people he led.
In the same way, fathers must determine whose voice will influence their family most. Your children will constantly be bombarded with messages contrary to the Bible. A father’s role is to teach his family the truth and lead them in making decisions that honor God.
Teaching Your Children to Love and Serve the Lord
Now that you understand a father’s role in his family, here are some practical ways to teach your children to love and serve the Lord.
- Pray before meals.
Praying before meals reminds your children that God provides for all we need.
- Have regular family devotions.
Studying God’s Word and His character will strengthen your bond as a family and teach your children the importance of spending time with God daily.
- Memorize scripture together.
Memorizing Bible verses teaches your children to write God’s Word on their hearts. They can turn to these verses for comfort, peace, and reminders of God’s character as they grow.
- Share what God is teaching you.

- Serve as a family.

Setting aside time weekly to have faith conversations as a family builds a strong foundation for the next generation. Be intentional about having faith conversations with your kids each week. This gives you a window into their hearts and a pulse on their mental, physical, and spiritual health.
- Pursue your children’s hearts.
Your kids want to know that they matter to you. You can express your care by asking questions, praying with and for them, and communicating a desire to know what’s going on in their hearts.
Doing these things does not guarantee that your children will grow up to love and follow the Lord for the rest of their lives. However, these habits will give your children a firm foundation of truth to build their lives.
