5 Tools for Victory in Spiritual Battles

Our minds become a spiritual battlefield as we deal with anxiety, depression, and negativity toward circumstances and people. Those internal struggles can lead to division in churches when we believe lies and allow our hearts to become ungrateful. It’s a destructive path in opposition to the abundant life God desires for us.

What goes on in our minds is truly a spiritual battle. Satan would love for this spiritual warfare to cause us to be ineffective in ministry and miss all God has for us, but Paul tells us in Philippians 4 how to “stand fast” and maintain the high ground against the enemy.

Understanding the Spiritual Battlefield

“Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.”—Philippians 4:1

John 10:10 tells us two agendas battling for our lives: God’s desire for us to have an abundant life in Him, and Satan’s desire to steal, kill, and destroy all that God has for us. The battle lies in our minds and emotions, and we are already prisoners of war if we don’t see the spiritual battle raging.

Whoever holds the highest ground in traditional warfare wins, and the same applies to spiritual battles. Throughout his letters to various churches, the apostle Paul tells his readers to “stand” against the enemy. By saying this, he means we don’t have to fight to take the high ground in the battle because we are already fighting from the high ground. We don’t have to fight for victory. Instead, we fight from a position of victory because Jesus already achieved the victory on the cross by overcoming sin and death. Satan knows he can’t take the high ground, so instead he tries to get us to come down from the high ground.

Jesus reminds us of this victory in John 16:33 when he says, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

5 Weapons to Battle Spiritual Warfare

Paul details five weapons in Philippians 4 that can be used to help us stand our ground in  spiritual battles y. When these weapons are used in addition to the armor of God,the enemy cannot  lure us down from the high ground of victory in Christ.

  • Unity

We are vulnerable to spiritual attacks from the enemy when we try to live out the Christian life on our own or when we live in conflict and disunity with other believers. Satan often tries to isolate us to get us to give up the high ground.

To force us into isolation, Satan tries to stir up division in the body of Christ. In the case of the church of Philippi, two women — Euodia and Syntyche — were having some sort of conflict. Paul calls them out and asks them to “be of the same mind in the Lord” (Philippians 4:2). Conflicts and divisions can easily arise in the church, and the resulting discord can seriously hinder our witness and ministry.

When we are unified in the body of Christ, we become an unstoppable force capable of defeating the spiritual battles the enemy wages against us. We should seek clarity during times of conflict and be united in our mission and message. Unity doesn’t demand uniformity, and we should not let personal preferences and opinions cause conflict.

  • Worship

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice.”—Philippians 4:4

Our spiritual warfare is fought through our worship of Christ. We are ushered into the presence of God through worship, and Satan cannot bring us down when we are focused on worship.

Our worship is especially powerful when we choose to worship even when times are difficult and our praise doesn’t come easily. We can always have joy in Christ, making worship in all circumstances possible. We can choose to praise God through the difficulties of spiritual warfare, and eventually our feelings will follow.

People worship as a way of maintaining the high ground in spiritual battles.

  • Prayer

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”—Philippians 4:6-7

When we feel increased anxiety as a result of spiritual warfare, our response should be to go to our knees. Anxiety is often an indicator that we haven’t spent enough time in God’s presence through prayer.

Prayer keeps our hearts and emotions guarded from the enemy. Making prayer the first response to anxious thoughts is a powerful weapon to fight spiritual battles. It’s also important to guard our hearts through prayer even before we feel the heaviness of a spiritual battle. We should consistently ask God to protect our minds against the enemy and for Him to give us strength and clarity.

  • Thanksgiving

“Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.”—2 Corinthians 2:14

Satan often tries to get us to doubt God’s character and goodness by pointing out what we don’t have. When we allow Satan to convince us that God is holding out on us, we are lured off the high ground. Yet when we have thankful hearts and meditate on God’s faithfulness in our lives, we stand strong against spiritual warfare.

To develop a grateful heart, we can begin each morning by listing five reasons to give thanks to God. That can change our mindset in the spiritual battle against negative thoughts and help us maintain the high ground.

  • Truth

“Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”—Philippians 4:8

Satan is the father of lies. He daily bombards us with spiritual attacks filled with lies about God, ourselves, and others. It can be easy to give in and believe these lies, but we stand strong against these spiritual battles when we focus on the truth of what God has said instead of the lies of the enemy.

When we take every thought captive to Christ, we guard our thoughts against lies, and negative emotions like unforgiveness and bitterness can be replaced by intentional truth from God’s Word.

We should regularly ask ourselves what lies of the enemy we are believing and replace those lies in our minds with the truth of God’s word. When we do that, we discover how God loves us, has a plan for our lives, forgives us, and is always with us.

Implementing Your Spiritual Battle Plan

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,…”—2 Corinthians 10:3-5

We face spiritual battles daily. Yet when we walk in unity with the body of Christ, guard our minds with the truth, and commit ourselves to worship, thanksgiving, and prayer, we have real power to stand our ground against the enemy.

The best way to begin using these weapons of spiritual warfare is to connect with a biblical community at church and join a small group. Walking in community with other believers helps hold us accountable to these practices as we see God’s faithfulness in all our lives.

Abundant life in Jesus doesn’t just begin when things are going well. God wants to offer us an abundant life even during challenging circumstances as we learn to trust Him. Using the weapons of spiritual warfare will deepen your dependence on Him and strengthen your defense against the enemy.

Takeaway

Jesus has already placed us in a position of victory when He defeated sin and death. When we face spiritual battles, we can stand confidently knowing we already have the high ground in Christ. The battle for the mind is about standing firm and refusing to surrender that high ground. God invites us to begin living with the mentality of the abundant life filled with joy, gratitude, and truth because His's peace and victory are available to us.
